Growing Health Huron Families

In this new project, families create a healthier life through participation in a new approach to developing a healthy lifestyle.  Most programs focus on individuals making changes to their lives but most of us value the people we spend the most time with, our families. The Growing Healthy Huron Families project offers participating families the chance to learn together and use this experience to determine how, as a family, they can make changes that will improve their lives. And you will not be alone. Many families will be sharing this experience with you and you will have a health coach to offer support as you take the steps to improving your life.  This 9 month project will include 3 months of workshops and 6 months of evalution.  The workshops are a chance to participate with your family and learn how to exercise, cook and parent in a healthy, productive way and ALL of this on a low budget.  We will help educate families that no matter what your income is, it is possible to be healthy!

This project was funded by The Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport  (now amalgamated with The Ministry of Health)

The Artemis Study

Patients with Type-2 diabetes mellitus use devices such as blood glucose monitors, blood pressure devices, heart rate monitors and pedometers to assist with self-management of the disease.

Prevalence of Peripheral Arterial Disease in a Rural Population

The risk of death from myocardial infarction is about 5-fold higher in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) than in non-PAD patients. This study focuses on whether early detection of asymptomatic patients is possible by performing the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI). However, this simple, non-invasive, effective screening procedure is not routinely performed in most primary care offices.

Frequency of Mild Cognitive Impairment in a Rural Population

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transition stage between the cognitive decline of normal aging and the more serious problems caused by Alzheimer's disease (AD).  Individuals with MCI progress to AD at a 10-15% rate annually, whereas individuals with no cognitive impairment do so at a rate of 1-2%.  Thus, identifying patients with MCI is important in order to implement strategies designed to prevent or delay the onset of the disease minimizing the burden it represents for the individual, the family and society.

Community Pharmacy Based Diabetes Coaching Program

Diabetes is a complex chronic condition. Over 1,000 Ontarians are diagnosed as diabetics every week. Small changes in diabetics’ lives can have a huge impact on their lifestyle as well as blood glucose levels. They probably see their pharmacist a lot more than their other health care providers. With this study, we hope that community pharmacists can help diabetics make small changes in lives, for example, diet, exercise routines, weight loss etc. Diabetics face several challenges and with constant support and guidance they can take better informed choices for themselves. This in turn will help them lead healthier lives and benefit the community.

Electronic Communication with Family Physicians

Do you use the internet to pay your bills, talk to your family, shop and much more? Now imagine being able to use it to talk to your family physician. With ever increasing advance of technology in our daily lives, it only seems natural that we use it to communicate. Recent studies have found that over 95% of patients would like to email their physician. We are working to understand what kind of system works best and how we can maximize its utilities so that patients get much more satisfactory service from their doctor’s offices and add another facet to the evolving relationship with their family physician.

Improving Retirement Health and Wealth Education in a Rural Community

With retirement comes many changes to a person’s lifestyle and financial status. Declining health and changes to insurance coverage can lead to a large number of unexpected expenses in later years. This study will gather information about the residents of a small rural community who are in pre-retirement about how they stand right now in terms of their health and finances, and how much they know about how those things will change when they retire.  This information will be used to create an educational program specifically for rural communities to teach people to plan for all aspects of their life, focusing on their health, as they retire.
