A memo to physicians in Huron, Perth, Grey, Bruce:

in

National surveys indicate that the prevalence of important conditions such as heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and depression are more common in rural populations than in the urban sector. Yet, most clinical research takes place in academic institutions located in large urban areas using subjects close to those centres.

A number of community leaders in the Huron-Perth-Grey-Bruce area propose to create a research centre focussed on medical and health issues in rural populations – a first in Ontario and in Canada.

As word of this avenue of research is reaching other areas across the province and country, we have been approached by physicians, healthcare professionals and suppliers who need research on specific areas of health concern, yet who have no venue to have studies conducted professionally. To date, three physicians have committed to conduct or supervise research projects with the centre.

It has become clear that there is a definite need for Gateway, as a research centre and as an institute. Gateway’s vision is to improve the delivery of heathcare and preventive service to rural communities. Gateway will:

  • Build on the regional success of Healthkick, an award-winning initiative focussed on healthcare recruitment

  • Attract and initiate research studies for rural-specific issues in rural areas

  • Allow physicians and other healthcare professionals to participate in research as a benefit to their practices and interests and to a degree manageable to their practices and with professional assistance

  • Strengthen primary care service by providing and sharing research results specific to rural conditions

  • Assist in improving the delivery of care and medication regimes to rural populations

As an institute, Gateway will train and qualify investigators in the healthcare field for professional recognition.

Outline of a planned newsletter is attached. The edition for professoinals will focus on research and literature reviews of interest to rural applications and invite local commentary or contributions. The edition for public consumption will promote Gateway’s availability as an active proponent of rural concerns and invite participation in its research endeavours.

An invitation is also attached for the Gateway’s launch.
