Grand opening of new Healthcare Facility and home of the Gateway Rural Health Research Institute

 On October 7, 2008, the Municipality of Huron East will be celebrating the grand opening of its new Healthcare Facility showcasing a diverse and innovative group of rural healthcare programs. Greetings and a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 2:30pm with two tours happening from 3:00pm - 5:00pm and 7:00pm - 9:00pm. The centre is located at 32B Centennial Drive (behind the Seaforth Community Hospital and adjacent to the Community Care Access Centre). Please consider this your invitation!

National surveys indicate that the prevalence of important conditions such as heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and depression are more common in rural populations than in the urban sector. Yet, most clinical research takes place in academic institutions located in large urban areas using subjects close to those centres.

A Message & Invitation from the President

National surveys have demonstrated consistently over the years that the health status of Canadian rural residents is worse than that of their urban counterparts. For example, the frequency of common conditions such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, depression, and some forms of cancers, is higher in rural communities than in large urban centres. Despite this reality, clinical research dedicated to rural health issues is insufficient.

Mark Friday September 26 on your calendar! 4:00pm - 7:00pm reception for invited guests 7:00pm - 9:00pm open to the public for information and a get-acquainted session Venue to be the lawn fronting Seaforth hospital off Highway 8 and will be under cover so weather will not be a factor. Special guest speaker to be Dr Baretta Casey director of the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health. She is also professor and vice chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, UK College of Medicine.
